Online gambling companies in Spain have worked together to develop a new advertising code to regulate online gambling. The person in charge of preparing these rules has been JDigital, the Spanish Association for Digital Gaming, and they have the endorsement of the DGOJ. The new measures will take effect on January 15, 2020. Code of Conduct on Commercial Communications of Gambling Activities aims to establish additional control measures in both television and radio and digital advertising. They also seek to protect the consumer, mainly minors and other vulnerable groups. When preparing this voluntary code of conduct on advertising, the JDigital company has been based on the current legislation of other member countries of the European Union.
The main measures of the new advertising code are:
- Do not use the image of active professional athletes to promote the game.
- Do not use public figures, mainly celebrities with young fans.
- The prohibition of showing images of people under 25 years of age.
- Suggest that gambling is a solution to financial problems or that it is a way to recoup losses.
- The maximum value of the welcome bonuses will be € 200.
- Include logos warning about responsible gambling and the prohibition of minors under 18 years of age in the ads.
